Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told journalists on Friday that the countrys interests had been secured in Brexit negotiations and that Polands voice on migration issues was starting to become better heard.
Returning from an EU summit in Brussels, Morawiecki also expressed satisfaction that Permanent Structured Cooperation in defence (PESCO) had been inaugurated, adding that Poland wants to reinforce the EUs defensive capacity in full agreement with NATO, which, he emphasised, remains the countrys primary security guarantor.
The Polish PM also addressed the "green light" given to extending sanctions against Russia. "With the exception of a few smaller countries of southern Europe, everybody understands that sanctions against Russia must be extended because they are not only an element of political pressure on Russia but also an important symbol that the EU does not accept the annexation of Crimea or the war in eastern Ukraine," the prime minister said.
He went on to note that agreements concerning Brexit had been concluded in Polands favour, adding that he had spoken to UK Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday. He said the rights of Polish citizens in the UK were Polands main concern, particularly regarding social policy. Another priority Morawiecki highlighted was funding for local government projects. The UK has achieved agreement on funding of all projects currently being conducted under the 2014-202 funding period, Morawiecki said. Leaders of the EU 27 (without the UK) agreed on Friday for Brexit negotiations to progress to the second phase.
Morawiecki also indicated that there had been "a little green light of hope" at the summit regarding a solution to the migration problem. He said Poland had stressed for two years that the policy of compulsory relocation of refugees is not an adequate solution. The migration issue had resulted in the longest discussion at the summit, Morawiecki reported, because only a few countries still favour the current solution. "What is the light in the tunnel about?" Morawiecki asked rhetorically. "We have very clearly shown that that we want to help these people in situ, that these are not just idle words, its not just hundreds of thousands of zloty and a few containers (...) it is a great effort," Morawiecki said.
He added that during the summit, Poland had offered help to refugees in situ as well as in securing the external border. "We understand the problems at the EUs external borders," he said. "In this context, I emphasised the subject of Ukraine very firmly and the fact that were helping to alleviate pressure on the EUs eastern flank. That discussion took place just after the talks on Russian sanctions and therefore there was a certain correlation, a connection between the two topics, which facilitated our partners understanding."
He said that after "being heard loudly" for two years, Polands voice on migration was starting to get through, adding that he felt solidarity with southern member states.
The EU summit was Morawieckis first as prime minister. He left early to return to Poland for meetings and urgent and secret documents that awaited him in Warsaw. (PAP)
