Polands Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki held a phone conversation on Friday with the US Vice President Mike Pence, receiving congratulations on becoming Polish head of government, as well as an invitation to Washington.
The two politicians discussed bilateral ties, energy security, as well as collaboration in military affairs, the arms industry and economy, the Government Information Centre (CIR) told PAP.
PM Morawiecki pointed to "strong ties" between the two countries and expressed hope that dynamic contacts would be maintained "at the top political level."
As the Polish head of government explained, security is of key importance to Poland - both in terms of defence capability and energy security. Thus Warsaw welcomes Washingtons support for its efforts to diversify energy sources, such as seeking supplies of American gas and embarking on the Baltic Pipe project.
This is especially significant, PM Morawiecki added, because infrastructure, energy, transport and IT are major areas where members of the Three Seas Initiative (the 12 countries situated between the Black, Adriatic and Baltic Seas) aim to work together.
The Baltic Pipe is a strategic project to supply Norwegian gas to Poland and Denmark, as well as to recipients in neighbouring countries. The pipeline is scheduled to be ready by October 2022.
PM Morawiecki and VP Pence also discussed Nord Stream 2, the planned gas pipeline linking Russia and Germany through the Baltic Sea, a project opposed by Poland, the Baltic states and Ukraine.
As the Polish leader noted, Americas military presence in the region is very important for the security of Europe and shows transatlantic unity.
The US vice-president also congratulated the Polish PM - in his own capacity and on behalf of President Donald Trump - for taking charge of the Polish cabinet, as well as on the 100th anniversary of when Poland regained independence.
As the CIR announced, both politicians agreed to meet for further talks in Washington, with details set to be arranged shortly. At the same time, VP Pence accepted an invitation to visit Poland.(PAP)pm/
