Ди Каприо, выигравший "Оскар" в 2016 году, вышел на сцену, чтобы по традиции вручить награду победителю этого года – в данном случае, Эмме Стоун, завоевавшей статуэтку в номинации "Лучшая женская роль". Газета Independent приводит теорию киноманов, согласно которой ди Каприо мог случайно положить карточку с именем Стоун и названием фильма "Ла-ла ленд" за кулисами или случайно отдать ее продюсеру. В свою очередь, объявлявшие победителя в номинации "лучший фильм" актеры Битти и Данэвэй могли случайно взять именно эту карточку или же получить ее из рук продюсера – опять же, по ошибке. Фанаты считают, что таким образом ди Каприо мог "отомстить за годы своих мучений": его пять раз номинировали на Оскар, но награду он выиграл лишь спустя 22 года за фильм "Выживший". Однако, теория не выдерживает критики: Стоун ранее заявила, что держала в руках карточку все время, пока была за кулисами. По всей видимости, Битти держал копию карточки. Скандал уже получил свой хэштег в соцсетях – Envelopegate (конвертогейт – по аналогии с Уотергейтским скандалом).

As a film critic of medium-low importance, one of my most sacred duties is participating in the Washington Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) year-end awards extravaganza. During this hallowed time of year, I watch dozens of movies and mine my own recollection of the good, the bad, and the ugly to determine what, precisely, the best films of the year were. At the end of this grueling process—this death march through endless stacks of DVDs, searching for the rarest pearl in an ever-increasing sea of muck—we WAFCA members nominate up to five films/people in each category. The five films/people who earn the most votes in every category are then voted upon by the whole of the membership, the winners are chosen, the press release is sent out, and blessed, blessed relief descends upon us as we put the exercise to rest for 11 months.
