The tandem visited the place where they first met as children – the site of a former Jewish ghetto at Krakow’s Podgórze district, set up by Nazi Germans during World War II. “We never talked about those times,” Polański said. “We would meet in New York, Warsaw, even Beijing but never in our hometown. It’s surreal to be back here again, as all my memories are so vivid,” he added. The 84-year-old film director also visited the village of Wysoka, where he would hide from the Nazis following his escape from Krakow. Seventy-eight-year-old Horowitz took his friend to a Krakow-based flat where he developed his very first film. Horowitz is one of the youngest survivors of the Holocaust, whose wartime story was depicted in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. This is Polański’s first visit to Poland, after the country’s Supreme Court overturned a motion to reverse a decision by a Krakow court not to extradite the film director to the United States over a 1977 case of unlawful sex with a minor. “I am happy that thanks to a definite end to the extradition issue, Roman Polański could come to Poland and engage in such a personal project,” Jan Olszewski, the filmmaker’s lawyer said. The film is directed by Mateusz Kudła, the winner of the Gold Dolphin at the 2017 Corporate Media & TV Awards in Cannes for his short documentary “Photo Film People”. (aba) Source: Onet

As a film critic of medium-low importance, one of my most sacred duties is participating in the Washington Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) year-end awards extravaganza. During this hallowed time of year, I watch dozens of movies and mine my own recollection of the good, the bad, and the ugly to determine what, precisely, the best films of the year were. At the end of this grueling process—this death march through endless stacks of DVDs, searching for the rarest pearl in an ever-increasing sea of muck—we WAFCA members nominate up to five films/people in each category. The five films/people who earn the most votes in every category are then voted upon by the whole of the membership, the winners are chosen, the press release is sent out, and blessed, blessed relief descends upon us as we put the exercise to rest for 11 months.
