Одеський балетмейстер Павло Вірський прославив український танець на весь світ. Він почав займатися балетом лише у 18 років, що не завадило йому побудувати блискучу карєру. Подивитися на його постановки проходили Сальвадор ДалІ, Елізабет Тейлор, президент Монако та Єлизавета ІІ. Остання навіть запрошувала танцюристів до Букінгемського палацу. В одному й тому ж місті ансамбль Вірського міг давати по 10 концертів, і попри це щоразу збирати аншлаги. Біля каси продажу квитків найчастіше висіла табличка "Розкуплено". Головними критеріями успіху для нього стали дисципліна та майстерність. Останню відточував на репетиціях, яких зазвичай було по 2 на день, а то й 3. Звичайний поклін вони могли відпрацьовувати по кілька годин, що й казати про складні елементи. Аби навчитися тримати рівну лінію, доводилося цілими днями крутитись у репетиційному залі. Про дисципліну в ансамблі Вірського й узагалі ходили легенди. Хореограф починав з власного прикладу – наприклад, ніколи не запізнювався. Під час репетиції погрозливо ходив із палицею в руках і миттю помічав, якщо хтось працював упівсили. Хореограф встигав усе – придумати новий танець, переписати з диригентом мелодії, затвердити ескізи вишитих сорочок, перевірити якість швів на них і випросити у міністрів кілька квартир для солістів. Ансамбль забирав увесь час і сили, такої ж віддачі вимагав і від танцюристів. Танцювальну програму Вірський розбавляв комедійними мініатюрами, які вимагали від танцюристів ще й акторської майстерності. As a film critic of medium-low importance, one of my most sacred duties is participating in the Washington Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) year-end awards extravaganza. During this hallowed time of year, I watch dozens of movies and mine my own recollection of the good, the bad, and the ugly to determine what, precisely, the best films of the year were. At the end of this grueling process—this death march through endless stacks of DVDs, searching for the rarest pearl in an ever-increasing sea of muck—we WAFCA members nominate up to five films/people in each category. The five films/people who earn the most votes in every category are then voted upon by the whole of the membership, the winners are chosen, the press release is sent out, and blessed, blessed relief descends upon us as we put the exercise to rest for 11 months.
