The shooting will begin in February in the southern city of Wrocław to later move to other regions of Poland. Starting from Monday, an open casting will be held in Wrocław for the highly-anticipitated Polish-language series. The producers are looking for hundreds of people to be hired for crowd scenes. The series will be a cold-war thriller set in an alternate version of history where the Iron Curtain did not come down. The series takes place in 2002, 20 years after a 1982 terror attack undermined any Polish hopes of independence from Soviet Russia. The series follows a student and a discredited secret services officer who together discover a government conspiracy aimed at bolstering the authoritarian regime. In an interview posted by Netflix on YouTube Agnieszka Holland said: "Alternate history makes it possible to ask very profound questions (…) on who we are and where we are heading," but it also enables "to create a reality that is highly interesting cinematically." The premiere of the eight-episode series is scheduled for worldwide release this year. Holland is not new to Netflix productions, having directed a number of episodes of the hit show House of Cards. As a film critic of medium-low importance, one of my most sacred duties is participating in the Washington Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) year-end awards extravaganza. During this hallowed time of year, I watch dozens of movies and mine my own recollection of the good, the bad, and the ugly to determine what, precisely, the best films of the year were. At the end of this grueling process—this death march through endless stacks of DVDs, searching for the rarest pearl in an ever-increasing sea of muck—we WAFCA members nominate up to five films/people in each category. The five films/people who earn the most votes in every category are then voted upon by the whole of the membership, the winners are chosen, the press release is sent out, and blessed, blessed relief descends upon us as we put the exercise to rest for 11 months.
