Concerts abroad to mark hundred years of Polish independence

Last year the government adopted a plan for 2017-2021 which will see a mix of regional, national and international events to commemorate a hundred years since Poland gained independence in the aftermath of World War One. The ministry said there will be a Polish jazz delegation at the Hong Kong Arts Festival in March, including the band Kroke and musicians Anna Maria Jopek and Maciej Fortuna. Meanwhile in September the Bridging Europe festival will take place in Budapest. This year it will be dedicated to the culture and music of Poland and the Baltic States. The festival’s programme includes two concerts of Polish music, a film programme, and both jazz and folk music concerts, as well as an exhibition dedicated to Polish composer and statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Also in September Polish Radio’s National Symphony Orchestra is expected to perform in the Wiener Musikverein concert hall, Vienna. The orchestra will play works by Polish composers Stanisław Moniuszko and Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Other plans include the performance of the Polish play Dziady in Vilnius, a mini-musical on Ignacy Jan Paderewski in the US, and various independence-related museum exhibitions. (sl/vb) Source: PAP

As a film critic of medium-low importance, one of my most sacred duties is participating in the Washington Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) year-end awards extravaganza. During this hallowed time of year, I watch dozens of movies and mine my own recollection of the good, the bad, and the ugly to determine what, precisely, the best films of the year were. At the end of this grueling process—this death march through endless stacks of DVDs, searching for the rarest pearl in an ever-increasing sea of muck—we WAFCA members nominate up to five films/people in each category. The five films/people who earn the most votes in every category are then voted upon by the whole of the membership, the winners are chosen, the press release is sent out, and blessed, blessed relief descends upon us as we put the exercise to rest for 11 months.
