Здавалось дивним, чим ці мандрівні музиканти могли викликати такий гнів у радянської влади. Часто сліпі, тож із поводирями вони ходили від села до села, виступаючи на базарних площах, біля церков. Ліричні думи цих старців про героїчне минуле, або ж на релігійну тематику явно не вписувались у рамки ідеології, яку активно нав’язувала країна рад. Проти кобзарів розгорнули системний план ліквідації, розписаний на кілька років уперед. Виявити через бюрократичні вимоги Для початку потрібно було зрозуміти масштаб їхньої діяльності, а для цього видали постанови "Про обов’язкову реєстрацію музичних інструментів у відділах міліції та НКВС" та "Затвердження репертуару". Відтепер кожному кобзареві потрібно було отримати дозвіл на свою діяльність, інакше його прирівнювали до жебрака. Кобзарі За найменше порушення – кидали за ґрати, відправляли в ГУЛАГ або ж конфісковували кобзи. Тоді українці заступилися за своїх музикантів – почали переховувати їх, тож радянській владі довелося змінити тактику. Пропаганда Аби викорінити прихильність українців до кобзарів, газети зарясніли заголовками "Пильніше контролюйте кобзарів!", "Кобза – музична соха!". Доєдналися і лояльні до Кремля письменники, які вмить охрестили музикантів "скигліями" чи навіть "смердючими недоносками".  Кожному кобзареві потрібно було отримати дозвіл на свою діяльність  Докладали всіх зусиль, аби їхній романтичний образ перетворити на старих дідуганів, чиї пісні вже неактуальні та й зрештою нікому не цікаві. As a film critic of medium-low importance, one of my most sacred duties is participating in the Washington Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) year-end awards extravaganza. During this hallowed time of year, I watch dozens of movies and mine my own recollection of the good, the bad, and the ugly to determine what, precisely, the best films of the year were. At the end of this grueling process—this death march through endless stacks of DVDs, searching for the rarest pearl in an ever-increasing sea of muck—we WAFCA members nominate up to five films/people in each category. The five films/people who earn the most votes in every category are then voted upon by the whole of the membership, the winners are chosen, the press release is sent out, and blessed, blessed relief descends upon us as we put the exercise to rest for 11 months.
