В воскресенье, 16 сентября, в Варшаве стартует Международный конкурс имени Фридерика Шопена среди пианистов-аматоров. Он продлится до пятницы, 21 сентября. Музыкальное соревнование проводится уже в четвертый раз, в этому году в нем примут участие 39 пианистов со всего мира. Поскольку в этом году Польша 100-летие обретения независимости, то каждый из участников должен будет исполнить любую композицию польского пианиста, композитора, государственного и общественного деятеля Игнация Яна Падеревского. Стефан Вальчикевич из Ассоциации «Смольна», которая является соорганизатором конкурса, отметил, что термин «пианисты-аматоры» неточный, поскольку среди них есть музыканты, получившие образование: «Среди них есть ИТ-специалисты, клерки, банкиры, врачи, адвокаты и целая плеяда других профессий. Они приехали к нам со всего мира: есть много японских, французских, американских пианистов, а также несколько человек из Польши, двое или даже трое из которых врачи. Разнообразие участников и одновременно разнообразие их личностей огромное. Необходимо добавить, что для того, чтобы играть на фортепиано, на том уровне, который демонстрируют участники, нужно очень много работать». Во время конкурса у пианистов-иностранцев будет возможность ближе познакомиться с творчеством великих пианистов и композиторов Фридерика Шопена и Игнация Яна Падеревского. Также они смогут узнать, какой путь пришлось пройти Польше к обретению заветной независимости. IAR/dy

As a film critic of medium-low importance, one of my most sacred duties is participating in the Washington Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) year-end awards extravaganza. During this hallowed time of year, I watch dozens of movies and mine my own recollection of the good, the bad, and the ugly to determine what, precisely, the best films of the year were. At the end of this grueling process—this death march through endless stacks of DVDs, searching for the rarest pearl in an ever-increasing sea of muck—we WAFCA members nominate up to five films/people in each category. The five films/people who earn the most votes in every category are then voted upon by the whole of the membership, the winners are chosen, the press release is sent out, and blessed, blessed relief descends upon us as we put the exercise to rest for 11 months.
