War in Donbas triggered ‘silent’ HIV epidemic in Ukraine, - study The authors of the study published in the PNAS Magazine (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America) on Jan. 15 say the armed conflict in the Donbas has contributed to the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus in Ukraine. As reported by Censor.NET referring to Radio Svoboda, the researchers point out that HIV infection has turned into a ‘silent’ epidemic in Ukraine as half of the infected individuals are unaware of it while about 40 percent of persons who have this diagnosis being confirmed already suffer from the advanced stages of the disease. The scientists have found a correlation between displacement of approximately 1.7 million people and the spread of HIV infection. Read more: US to allocate $37.5M for Ukraine to fight HIV/AIDS According to Tatiana Vasilieva, the lead author of the study from the Oxford University’s Zoology Department, the war has made a lot of changes in Ukraine and the HIV epidemic is one of them. The study proved that the war contributed to the faster spread of the virus from Ukraine’s east to the rest of the country, she said. The rate of HIV infection in Ukraine having about 220 000 infected individuals in a country with a population of about 45 million people is one of the highest in Europe. The study was carried out by the international team of scientists led by experts from the University of Oxford and Public Health England NGO who analyzed the migration of viruses in Ukraine in 2012-2015.Источник: https://en.censor.net.ua/n3044561
