Число выживших после трепанации черепа в империи инков достигало 75-83%. Ученые из Университета Майами изучили 800 черепов людей, которые подверглись трепанации во времена империи инков в Перу в период с IV века до нашей эры по XVI век нашей эры, и установили, что процент выживших после операции был выше, чем во времена Гражданской войны в США, сообщает zn.ua со ссылкой на ScienceDaily. Вместе с тем, исследования ученых позволили узнать, что первые опыты трепанации у инков были неудачными. В IV-II веках до нашей эры процент выживших не превышал сорока. Высшей отметки — 91%— он достиг в период с XI по XV век. В последующее столетие средний коэффициент опустился до интервала в 75–83%. Стоит отметит, что смертность от трепанации во времена Гражданской войны составляла 46–56%. На данный момент исследователи не знают, как именно хирурги инков достигли таких высоких показателей, но у них есть предположения, относительно того, почему во времена Гражданской войны смертность была высокой. По словам ученых, во время войны врачи не стерилизовали инструмент и просовывали в открытый череп пальцы, чтобы прощупать рану и кость. Инки же каким-то образом справлялись с заражением и, предположительно, использовали листья кокаинового куста для анестезии. Ученые оценивали смертность по степени ремоделирования кости. Если на черепе не осталось следов заживления раны, то они считали  человека умершим из-за операции, а если кость носила следы коррекции, то признавали таких пациентов выздоровевшими.
