UN mission recommends Ukrainian govt should develop mechanism for compensation of damage caused by Donbas conflict
The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine recommends that the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine should introduce a legal framework for compensation for the property damaged or destroyed as a result of the conflict in Donbas. The government of Ukraine should also develop a national mechanism to make adequate, effective, prompt and appropriate remedies, including reparation, available to civilian victims of the conflict, especially those injured and the families of those killed, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said in its 20th report on the human rights situation in Ukraine presented in Kyiv on Tuesday. The mission also recommends law enforcement agencies should ensure effective investigation of cases of enforced disappearance, incommunicado detention, torture and ill-treatment in which Ukrainian forces (SBU, army, volunteer battalions, etc.) are allegedly involved, and consider establishing an inter-agency group in charge of investigation of such cases.
