 Russia’s General Staff says Ukraine may be involved in attack on its Syrian air base The General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation believes Ukraine may be involved in the drone attack on its air base in Syria.Major General Alexander Novikov, the chief of the Russian General Staff’s department for UAV construction and development told journalists, Censor.NET reports citing the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry. The Russian experts claim that the drones used in the air strike were armed with improvised explosive devices weighing about 400 grams each that were filled with metal balls as projectile materials with a burst radius of up to 50 meters. Each drone engaged in the attack carried 10 such bombs. "Preliminary examination revealed that the explosive agent used in the bombs was penthrite which is more powerful then hexogen. The abovementioned explosive agent, which cannot be produced in ‘kitchen laboratories’ or extracted from other ammunition, is produced by a number of countries including Ukraine-based Shostka Chemical Reagents Plant," Novikov said. On Jan. 3, Kommersant newspaper reported seven combat aircraft including four Su-24 front-line bombers, two Su-35S multipurpose fighter jets, and An-72 transport plane were destroyed in subversive attack on the Syrian Khmeimim airbase operated by Russians. According to the newspaper, the airbase ammunition depot detonated after being hit by a mortar shell. The Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged that the base was indeed attacked on Dec. 31, but said the reports of seven destroyed jets were ‘fake news’. Two military personnel were killed in a mortar strike, according to the ministry.
