Dobriansky, a former special envoy for Northern Ireland and undersecretary of state for global affairs, is set to replace Thomas Shannon, who announced his retirement earlier this year, according to Bloomberg.
The agency quoted “three people familiar with the decision,” who it said asked not to be identified ahead of the public announcement.
Dobriansky had also been considered for a senior job under former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was fired last month, Bloomberg reported.
Trump in mid-March named CIA director Mike Pompeo to replace Tillerson as US secretary of state.
Trump at the time also named Gina Haspel to take over for Pompeo at the CIA, noting she would be the agency’s first woman director.
