Politicians, diplomats and Polish-American organisations took part in a gala in Washington during which the Polish and US national anthems rang out.
There were performances of Polish dances and a concert of music by the great Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin.
Mercedes Schlapp, White House Director of Strategic Communications, told participants at the gala that US President Donald Trump has great respect for Poles, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, the day World War I ended, after 123 years of partition by Russia, Austria and Prussia.
The centenary is being celebrated with a host of events in Poland.
A concert in Warsaw for 50,000 people will be one of the highlights of November events marking the centennial.
