On Twitter, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said the talk with Michel Barnier was "good". Barnier called the meeting constructive. According to Morawiecki, Poland wants to protect the rights of Poles in the UK. Ahead of the meeting, government spokeswoman Joanna Kopcinska said that Poland wanted to protect Polish exports to the UK and ensure that Poles living in the UK keep their rights after Britain leaves the European Union. She also said that Poland wanted to convince Barnier that a deal with the UK was possible and that listening to people who said otherwise was not worthwhile. Barnier is in regular contact with the 27 European Union countries remaining in the bloc about various issues concerning Britains departure. The European Council is set to discuss possible scenarios and a timeline for the UKs exit later this month. The head of the council, Polish ex-Prime Minister Donald Tusk, said that the terms on which the UK will leave the bloc could be concluded this month. The UK is pushing for an exit deal to be paired with an agreement on future European Union-UK ties. But if no deal is agreed, customs and border controls would return as per the World Trade Organiations rules. The UK started the process of leaving the European Union in March last year and a final divorce is expected in March next year. (vb) Source: PR24
