The goal on Friday came after Bayern Munich were awarded the penalty by the German premier league’s new Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system following a foul on Lewandowski.
The Polish star striker ended the previous Bundesliga season as the division’s second-best scorer on 30 goals, one less than Gabonese forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
In addition to scoring in Bundesliga matches, Lewandowski bagged eight goals in nine games in last season’s Champions League, where his Bayern lost in the quarterfinals to Real Madrid.
The striker has also been prolific for the Polish national team, which is well on track to advance to the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Lewandowski, who captains the squad, has 11 goals in six matches in the campaign so far, with Poland now set to face off against Denmark in Copenhagen on 1 September. (str)
