He came in behind Dane Leon Madsen. Great Britains Robert Lambert was third.
Hampel said Madsens win was “fully deserved, he was out of reach”.
“I am pleased with second place. The start and the end of todays competition were not successful [for me] but I was able to collect a few points during the event,” Hampel added.
The newly crowned European champion said of the speedway event in Chorzów that he was happy to win the title and that the organisers had “prepared a great track at this beautiful venue”.
The event on Saturday started with a minutes silence in honour of Polish international motorcycle speedway rider Paweł Waloszek, who was second in the 1970 Individual Speedway World Championship, who died in April aged 80. (vb)
